From academic resources to motorist assistance, here are some of the services, programs and support systems available on the Texas Tech University campus.

Texas Tech University has departments, programs and facilities dedicated not only to helping students adjust to their new environment, but also to assisting them in succeeding and thriving in and out of the classroom. From innovative spaces in the library and programs to increase academic success, to free bicycle and car clinics and networking events, here are some of the free resources available to students on the Texas Tech campus.

1. Transportation & Parking Services, Room 145, Administrative Support Center, 407 Flint Ave.

Transportation & Parking Services handles all transportation needs on campus, including issuing parking permits, setting busing schedules and resolving citations. The office also offers various services, including free Citibus service for anyone on campus; Raider Ride, a free night shuttle service for students who begin or end their trip on campus; free car clinics before fall and spring break and once during the summer; free bicycle clinics in April and October; and the Motorist Assistance Program, which provides three instances of free services per year to anyone on campus, including airing up flat tires, jump-starting or unlocking a vehicle or providing a gallon of gas.

2. IT Help Central, Room 101, Administrative Support Center, 407 Flint Ave. and Room 010, Student Union Building

IT Help Central offers a variety of services by phone, email or walk-up service, including help connecting to TTUnet WiFi and resolving issues with eRaider accounts, the Raiderlink Portal and TechMail. The IT website provides information about discounted hardware and free software for students; computer lab and printing locations; and free training opportunities offered by IT each semester. Walk-up services are available in two locations: the Central Service Desk at the Administrative Support Center and in the basem*nt of the Student Union Building.

3. Student Counseling Center, Room 201, Student Wellness Center, 1003 Flint Ave.

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers a variety of mental health care services to Texas Tech students. The SCC includes a walk-in clinic, treatment services and individual, couples and group counseling. The center also provides crisis intervention services, including the 24-hour Texas Tech Crisis Helpline at (806) 742-5555, and the MindSpa, "a sanctuary in which to pamper and nurture mind, body and spirit."

4. Rec Center, 3219 Main St.

Undergraduate and graduate students have access to the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center (also known as the Rec Center) through the student activity fee they pay with tuition each semester. The Rec Center houses athletic and workout facilities, including weightlifting and cardio equipment; a Climbing Center with 4,000 square feet of climbing; an aquatic center; and the Texas Tech Leisure Pool, which features full wireless access, a 645-foot lazy river and 25-person hot tub. Students also can join more than 80 group fitness classes, including cycling, cardio, yoga and Zumba, or sign up for an intramural sports team or individual event.

5. University Career Center, Wiggins Complex, 3211 18th St.

The University Career Center assists students preparing and searching for on- and off-campus job opportunities. The center provides resumé and cover-letter critiques, mock interviews, career counseling and assessments and an updated list of opportunities via Hire Red Raiders. Throughout the year, the center also hosts career fairs, networking events, the annual Mocktail Party and a variety of workshops addressing workplace topics and issues. The center also provides ongoing services to alumni after graduation.

6. Student Disability Services, Room 335, West Hall, 2500 Broadway

The Texas Tech Student Disability Services (SDS) is one of the most comprehensive departments for students with disabilities in the state, with staff available to provide a variety of accommodations and services for individuals with disabilities.

SDS provides support in requesting letters of accommodation, applying for scholarships, requesting interpreters and accessing the SDS drop-in tutoring schedule. The SDS website also provides information about students' rights and responsibilities regarding their accommodations.

In addition to these services, SDS also offers a supplemental fee-for-service academic enhancement program for students with learning disabilities and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, the TECHniques Center. The program provides one-on-one, regularly scheduled content and study-skills tutoring, as well as weekly meetings with an academic counselor.

7. University Library, 2802 18th St. and 15th Street & Detroit Avenue

During the regular semester, the Texas Tech University Library opens at 10 a.m. on Sundays and stays open until 11 p.m. on Fridays. The library also is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.

Students have access to more than 200 public computers, more than 2 million books, more than 100,000 e-books, more than 400 research databases, anatomical models and a Government Documents Collection.

The library also provides a kiosk to check out laptops; private and group study spaces, including multimedia conferencing tables and self-services scanners; a Digital Media Studio that loans a variety of equipment, including cameras, voice recorders and projectors; a Makerspace offering 3D printing and scanning; a 3D animation lab; a virtual reality lab; and the Crossroads Recording Studio.

Just north of the University Library is the university's archival library, the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library (SWC/SCL), open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the regular semester. The SWC/SCL collections include The Southwest Collection; The Sowell Family Collection in Literature, Community and the Natural World; the University Archives; the Rare Books collection and The Crossroads of Music Archive. The collections include books, periodicals, manuscripts, oral histories, maps, digital collections, newspapers, artifacts and videos.

8. Student Union & Activities, 15th & Akron, Student Union Building

The Student Union Building (SUB) is home to the Student Union & Activities, which includes the Student Activities Board (SAB). SAB hosts more than 60 free events for students each year, including daily events during Homecoming Week; the university's annualArbor Day service event; the student tailgate tradition, RaiderGate; and the annual campus-wide talent show, Red Raider Showcase. SAB also hosts free Late Night Movies at 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays in the SUB Escondido Theater.

In addition to multiple meeting and study rooms, the SUB includes a games area in the basem*nt with pool, ping pong and foosball tables, darts and board games, and houses several departments, including the Center for Campus Life, the Student Government Association offices and Student Legal Services.

9. Support Operations for Academic Retention (SOAR), Room 164, Drane Hall, 2515 15th St.

Support Operations for Academic Retention (SOAR) provides services that supplement classroom and lab instruction to help students succeed academically and develop lifelong learning skills. SOAR provides services through four main initiatives:

• Programs for Academic Development and Retention provides academic and personal management skills to help students achieve success on an academic, personal and professional level.

• Supplemental Instruction offers free, peer-led review sessions for historically difficult courses. The sessions are led by students who have demonstrated academic mastery in the course and prepare weekly review sessions.

• The Texas Success Initiativeis a developmental education program mandated by the state of Texas to provide additional support to students who have not demonstrated college-readiness in reading, writing and mathematics.

• The Learning Center provides the resources needed to obtain academic independence and success. Drop-in peer tutoring is available in several subjects, including math, physics, chemistry, biology, accounting and engineering.

10. Risk Intervention & Safety Education (RISE), Room 247, Drane Hall, 2515 15th St.

Risk Intervention & Safety Education (RISE), part of the Office of the Dean of Students, empowers students to live vital, meaningful lives through comprehensive prevention education. RISE provides a variety of services, including educational workshops, free events, free sexual health resources and information about stress management, mental health, consent, sexual assault prevention and suicide prevention.
