"What is the government doing?"Since the headlines of students dying by suicide are making the rounds, this question has been asked constantly. The government has been working on UMMEED — a ray of hope!To address the growing concern about self-harm among students, the Ministry of Education (MoE) released a comprehensive set of guidelines titled UMMEED, an acronym for Understand, Motivate, Manage, Empathize, Empower, and Develop. It aims to enhance sensitivity, understanding, and support for students dealing with self-harm tendencies. Guided by the core principle that "Every Child Matters," these guidelines underscore the crucial role of forging strong partnerships among schools, parents, and the community. The goal is to create a robust societal support system, a pivotal strategy in preventing suicide and eradicating the stigma surrounding suicidal behavior. Here are the key highlights of the Guidelines:1. School Wellness Team (SWT): Schools will be required to establish a School Wellness Team (SWT) responsible for overseeing the implementation of various school activities geared towards raising awareness about mental well-being. 2. Challenging Harmful Notions: The guidelines advocate for eliminating harmful societal notions like discouraging the practice of comparing oneself to peers and shifting the focus away from measuring success solely based on academic achievements.3. Practical Measures: Schools must provide a physically and emotionally safe environment. Suggestions include securing empty classrooms, improving lighting in dimly lit areas, and maintaining gardens and grassy spaces within the school premises. 4. Periodic Restructuring: The guidelines recommend the periodic restructuring of the School Wellness Team (SWT) based on the school's available resources. All stakeholders have the opportunity to participate in raising awareness and building essential capacities.5. Continuous Evaluation: Schools need to assess the functioning of the School Wellness Team (SWT) annually. Depending on the effectiveness of the team, further assistance might be provided. The UMMEED guidelines acknowledge the gravity of the situation and reflect a deep commitment to nurturing the well-being of every student under its care. As these guidelines are set into motion, we hope they will serve as a model to help students and save lives.#schooladministrators #studentsmentalhealth #education

The following article regarding children and school attendance amidst mounting anxiety concerns highlights it's essential to recognise schools' critical role in supporting children's mental health. To truly support children grappling with anxiety and mental health concerns, there needs to be comprehensive programmes and plans set in place within the educational infrastructure. Social-emotional learning and wellbeing programmes must be a consideration and an urgent priority in schools. Our founder, Nadim Saad, aptly states, "Taking children out of schools can compound the issue as it can make it harder to reintegrate children later. But schools should be a safe space to help students better manage their anxiety, and it’s unfortunately often not the case. SEL and wellbeing programmes are required to create the right environment for children to help each other rather than ostracise each other as it sometimes happens."Our clinically approved programmes are based on four foundational pillars: teaching emotional literacy, embedding gratitude and reflection, developing essential life skills, and introducing connection tools. By investing just 10 minutes a day, schools can transform the wellbeing of their students, equipping them with the skills and confidence they need to navigate the challenges of modern life. As we work towards building more resilient, compassionate, and mentally healthy generations, we must ensure schools are equipped to be the nurturing ground for such growth. https://lnkd.in/dzZhYKj3#WellbeingInSchools #SEL #ChildrensMentalHealth #10MinutesMatter #schoolleadership #socialemotionallearning #SEL #childrensmentalhealth

What do you think about this? It says creating a mental health code “could eliminate the need for medical evidence in cases of known and established mental health difficulties and reduce the need for intervention via prosecution”.I absolutely agree that we need more information on the level of absence due to mental health issues . An additional code might support that. However, if there are "known and established" mental health difficulties, they would surely be authorised (I code) and therefore nobody would be thinking about prosecution. Schools would need very clear guidance on how to decide what "known and established" means...All the schools I work with do their utmost to support pupils with difficulties
