The Center for World University Rankings’ Global 2000 list is the largest academic rating of global universities.
For the sixth straight year, Texas Tech University maintains its mark as one of the top institutions of higher education in the world based on the 2023 Global 2000 List by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), which ranks the top 2,000 of more than 20,000 colleges and universities worldwide.
The CWUR has ranked Texas Tech among the top universities globally for the sixth straight year, representing acknowledgment of the institution's mission as a top research university. Texas Tech ranks No. 442 in the world and No. 118 in the U.S., placing it in the top 2.2% of universities worldwide.
The latest CWUR rankings also ranked Texas Tech No. 427 in the world in research performance and No. 540 in alumni employment.
"Because the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) emphasizes metrics that reflect the reputation and success of our students and faculty, I am pleased that Texas Tech is ranked as one of the top universities in the world and the United States,” said Lawrence Schovanec, Texas Tech president. “As we conclude our first century, it's gratifying that the CWUR recognizes Texas Tech as a world-class higher education institution.”
The CWUR is a leading consulting organization providing policy advice, strategic insights and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes. It publishes authoritative global university rankings, known for objectivity, transparency and consistency, which are trusted by students, academics, university administrators and government officials around the world.
The CWUR uses four objective indicators to rank the world's universities:
- Quality of education, which is measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major academic distinctions relative to the university's size (25%)
- Alumni employment, which is measured by the number of university alumni who have held top executive positions at the world's largest companies (25%)
- Academic distinction of faculty (10%)
- Research performance:
- Research output, which is measured by the total number of research papers published in the last 10 years (10%)
- High-quality publications, which is measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (10%)
- Influence, which is measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly influential journals (10%)
- Citations, which is measured by the number of highly cited research papers (10%)
Since 2016, Texas Tech has been recognized among 146 public and private U.S. research institutions in the “Very High Research Activity” category, also known as “Carnegie Tier One,” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Office of Research and Innovation
The Office of Research and Innovation is tasked with facilitating excellence in research, scholarship and creative activity for Texas Tech students, faculty and staff. The office promotes an academicenvironment embracing creativity, curiosity, innovation, diversity, ethics and integrity.
Among other programs, the OR&I supports responsible and safe conduct ofresearch, faculty development and recognition, interdisciplinary collaborations, externally sponsored research, partnerships withindustry and community stakeholders, international research collaboration and the application of research for the benefit of society. The OR&I promotes a culture of creative expression, discovery, innovation and collaboration with the goal of advancing Texas Tech's status as an elite national research university.
