How clear should the letters be on an eye test? ›

20/20 vision is considered "normal" vision, meaning you can read at 20 feet a letter that most people should be able to read at 20 feet. If a patient reads the 20/200 line that means they can read at 20 feet the letters that people with "normal" vision can read at 200 feet.

Visit your medical optometrist for primary medical eye care, including eye medication prescriptions, monitoring and managing eye diseases, or emergency eye care services. Visit an ophthalmologist for interventions like surgical treatments for serious eye diseases, advanced ocular problems, or refractive eye surgery.

This means that the smallest line on the eye chart that you can read at 20 feet can be read by someone with perfect vision who is standing 100 feet away. In a regular Snellen chart, you can only miss 2 or less for each eye. If you miss more than 2 letters, you have to move up to the next line.

That depends on the age of the person being tested. A 3- to 4-year-old should be able to read the 20/40 line, and a 5-year-old the 20/30 line. Older children and adults should be able to read the majority of letters on the 20/20 line.

Your visual acuity score is measured by a fraction. Perfect vision yields a score of 20/20, which means the viewer can see the same letters at 20 feet away what another normal viewer could also see at 20 feet. If your vision is less than perfect, you might receive a score of 20/40 or 20/50.

This means that you blink less and your eyes are less moistened by tear fluid. This may lead to dry eyes and eye fatigue which, of course, also influence the result of the eye test. Our tips: Try to be as rested and relaxed as possible when you go for your sight test.

Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes liquifies and contracts. Scattered clumps of collagen fibers form within the vitreous and can cast tiny shadows on your retina. The shadows you see are called floaters.

The visual acuity test is used to determine the smallest letters you can read on a standardized chart (Snellen chart) or a card held 20 feet (6 meters) away. Special charts are used when testing at distances shorter than 20 feet (6 meters). Some Snellen charts are actually video monitors showing letters or images.

20/20 vision is referred to as the standard, or how a “normal” person sees. This means, that when you stand 20 feet away from an eye chart, you see what the normal person should see. The American Optometric Association states that a person with 20/20 vision can clearly identify a row of 9mm letters from 20 feet.

OD, OS and OU or ODS

The first abbreviations explain which eye the prescription is for. They are abbreviations for Latin terms for your eyes: OD: stands for oculus dexter, or your right eye. OS: stands for oculus sinister, or your left eye. OU or ODS: stands for oculus uterque/oculus dexter et sinister, or both eyes.

A person taking the test covers one eye from 6 metres or 20 feet away, and reads aloud the letters of each row, beginning at the top. The smallest row that can be read accurately indicates the visual acuity in that specific eye. The symbols on an acuity chart are formally known as "optotypes".
